THE SUSTAINABLE LIFE MELTING WITH HERBS, MARINE ZEMLJE

The proposal contains a number of activities that could be organised by a group of villages in the area of Marine zemlje. The activities would be centred on the existing Dom kulture (Cultural Centre), requiring minimal investment. Additional activities would engage the locals through the cultivation of indigenous medicinal herbs and creation of related products, which would then be presented to visitors. Furthermore, aromatherapy services could be offered, and a small field clinic would be a valuable asset to this part of Vis both in and off season.

PODSTRAŽJE – SUPERMARKET

The whole area around the village of Podstražje is filled with tourists in the summer. There is just one small grocery store in the village. This proposal envisages revitalisation of the existing abandoned buildings such as those of the Cultural Centre (Dom kulture) and the closed school. The Cultural Centre could house a range of activities as well as a small history museum depicting life in the village at the time when the Centre and the school were still functional. The school building could house an agricultural centre organising workshops and presentations of traditional village products and customs.

PEACE POLJE (PLISKO POLJE)

The village of Plisko polje is located in the vicinity of a World War II airfield. This is also the location of a cricket field on which tournaments are held to this day, and the tradition began at the time of English rule on Vis in early 19th century. By contrasting the intimacy of the village with the open expanse of the airfield, and organising events thematising Napoleon's Illyrian Provinces and World War II, Plisko polje could become an unmissable spot on the Vis plateau.

PODHUMLJE REVIVAL

The village of Podhumlje is located at equal distance from the highest point of Vis on Mount Hum at one end, and Pritišćina Cove on the other. At the centre of the planned walking path connecting Hum with the sea at Pritišćina is the estate of once the richest family on Vis, the Dojmi family. The present owner is willing to turn the estate into an agricultural centre offering education for the visitors and a chance for active participation in everyday traditional village work.

PIPELINE UNDER THE WINE

The village of Podšpilje is the centre of agricultural and social activities of all villages on the island of Vis. The existing buildings – community centre, winery, abandoned school and church – along with a bocce court, and a large water cistern are an ideal basis for the present activities to be raised to the next level, made more attractive for tourists and other individuals interested in all types of education on the cultivation of grapes and olives as well as the production of wine and oil, and the distillation of medicinal herbs.

PODSELJE TINY SOCIAL HUB

Throughout the island students noticed a number of abandoned buildings once used as electrical substations. With very simple interventions these buildings could be turned into facilities for various activities, e.g. food preparation, social games, overnight stays, and sightseeing. The buildings would be self-sustainable; they would have their own small rainwater tanks and solar collectors to ensure energy independence. A series of these small buildings could be scattered across the island's interior like lighthouses.
